BBC 2.0.

The BBC are asking for your ideas in order to reboot their website. Personally, I think the current version is in no way in need of a makeover, but with prizes galore for highly-rated entries, why not give it a shot? It’ll be hard with competition like this, though.

LOL I like the link to telly text pic :)

I think it is a good idea to redesign BBC main page - it is lame and can be so much better.

First off - Hi Lizze!
secondly I have to agree - the bbc home page is pretty bland. It also has too much text and it doesn’t direct my eye very well. Although there is some sort of hierarchy to the information too much is on the same level and any time I’ve reached the page and say had to look for movies I end up using the firefox find function (which while I’m on the subject why can’t safari and IE have their find dialogues built into the browser and not open a new dialogue?) Whatever the task is its difficult because there is so much information to convey - might be worth checking out other large portals - apparently yahoo are testing a new design check it out

I like it, but I worked there for a year so maybe it’s a matter of familarity breeding…um…comfort. However, I see what you mean about too much text onscreen. The problem is that there’s no way around this; there’s so much to the BBC and none of the text is redundant, it has to be there. It’ll be interesting to see what people come up with…

There seems to be a lot of controversy about the whole angle taken by the BBC!
Murdoch recently slated the Beebs approach to its web operation.

Is the motive saving money or is it a public experiment?

The BBC’s ‘cell’ approach to building its site makes it fairly unusable, too many cooks, too many navigation schemes…(sorry colin!)

Ciaran - which bits would you leave out of the current page to make it easier to use? So far a couple of the entries have really stripped the BBC homepage down

well, I’d try and group things into maybe 4-5 main categories instead of the 12 plus currently in the browse section. I’d also give greater prominence to the A-Z and maybe call it the category A-Z. Perhaps some sort of predictive input like Google Suggest? The today section is a wee bit all over the place and has too much going on. I really like the news ticker at bbc news maybe it could be integrated. But these are personal preferences of mine so what about MyBBC where users can create their own homepage with content relevant to them? I’d imagine a hugh amount of bbc traffic is repeat traffic so personalise the service for these users.
Anyway, I think though I’m gonna give it a go to see what I come up with.
