Well now one British online vigilante “Shiver Metimbers” is leading tens of thousands of “scambaiters” in a crusade to shut down ‘419 scammers’, named after the section of Nigeria’s criminal code that covers elaborate, e-mailed sob stories promising a share of nonexistent fortunes in return for upfront payments. Shiver specializes in the counter story, often convincing the scammers to perform outlandish tasks in their desperate pursuit of cash — like getting tattoos or holding up derogatory signs, which he then posts on his site for the online world’s amusement.
For instance the poor fellow above, “Satukeski Babatope” thought he had lucked in when “Father Bateyoo Reelgud” (”bait you real good”) of the Church of Bread and Fish replied to Mr Babatope’s sob story which claimed the death of his parents had left him penniless.
Scammer Shiver Metimbers was winding Mr Babatope up, however, and the fraudster was confounded after the fake minister, who promised $352,330, died in an untimely accident with a combined harvester. The whole fiction lasted four months. read the letters back and forth + photos
