Martin Short was born in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada and went to Westdale Secondary School. He later attended McMaster University and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in social work in 1972.
His father was Charles Short, an executive with Canada’s largest steel company, who came to North America as a stowaway Roman Catholic refugee from Belfast, Northern Ireland during the Troubles at age 21. His mother, Olive, a former child prodigy of the violin, was concertmaster of the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra. She was the first female concertmaster in North America. A cousin, Clare Short, is a member of the British Parliament.

I wonder did his da have anything to do with the shorts factory?

And yes, his cousin Claire Short, is ‘that’ Claire Short! The ex-Chief Whip for Labour.

Clare Short PC (born 15 February 1946) is a British politician. She is currently the Independent Member of Parliament for Birmingham Ladywood. She was initially elected for the Labour Party, and was Secretary of State for International Development.

Clare Short was born to Irish Catholic parents from County Armagh, Northern Ireland, in Birmingham, England in 1946.

She would later be supportive of peaceful Sinn Féin initiatives, although she was never a supporter of IRA violence, some of the worst of which was inflicted in a 1974 bombing of her hometown of Birmingham.

Short is a cousin of Canadian-American actor/comic Martin Short

HE’S CANADIAN!!!!!

NOOOOOOOOOOOO

I can’t believe this day has come. All my life, I hoped that one day I’d be reading the news that Martin Short’s Da was from Belfast, and I just have. Thank you, Daily Warthog, you’ve made my day. Now, if possible, could you find out if David Spade has roots in Portaferry? Or, if it’s not too much to ask, if the late great John Candy’s ma was from Bangor or not?

Canadian…. like from Canada?
That place is just a flat above a really good party!

Hello. My name is Martin Short and I am from Belfast. I am 42 years old and I am a school principal. My father was Edward Short (born Belfast) and my grandfather was from South Armagh N.Ireland. His name was Michael Short and from a large family whom I’m trying to trace and find out more about. I also know that Clare Short’s (MP) family is from South Armagh as well. Can yoy help me contact Martin Short ( Canadian actor) to investigate more.

I think he would be interested in a Martin Short from Belfast and I also have a brother Michael. I think this is more than a coincidence!!

Please help
