Social Networking Bullshit

Over at Wired, Michael Calore has pretty much summed up how I feel about Bebo, MySpace and Facebook et al. Michael has just closed his MySpace account basically because it’s a pain in the arse. He just gets pestered by ‘new’ friends and the useful stuff it used to do for him it no longer does. I have reluctantly signed up to Bebo, MySpace and Facebook but I cringe everytime I log in. I hate the restrictions placed upon my profile, the sandboxing, as if the internet started and ended in each respective community (and for some people this is undoubtedly true). Managing your profile and relationships takes time and is so public - for example, Bebo tells the world when you last logged in and you always feel compelled to write some nonsense back when someone writes you a message (We went out at the weekend and got pissed seems to be the extent of most messages). Its horrible, in addition to that like Michael I use other sites that do what these sites purport to do but better, I just don’t have time for it all. I use Wordpress to Blog, Flickr to share photos and LinkedIn to manage my profile (and I wouldn’t mind potential employers reading my LinkedIn profile). Anyway I think I might go and delete my MySpace then I think Bebo might be the next to get it.

I agree wholeheartedly. It’s a pain in the arse to check your various profiles, because you feel guilty if someone’s added a comment and you don’t reply. If you’ve got a band or a small business, fair enough, MySpace especially is a great way to get a bit of free publicity and gain ‘friends’ in the business. But if apart from this, and at the risk at sounding old and/or sexist, MySpace, Bebo et al seems to exist solely for girls to check out other girl’s profiles, and gossip/bitch; it’s just an online, real-time version of Heat magazine. My MySpace and Bebo pages, after initally setting them up and getting bored of them after a week or so, are mostly inactive. In fact, I’m considering closing all my other accounts and keeping my thoughts for the Warthog and my own blog. Who’s with me?

I fond it hard enoguh to update my website nevermind my profiles, lol

We are not really their target market though are we?

Teens and students with too much time on their hands are the target market. Its a little like MSN, i haven used it in a year or two, but thats a case of me outgrowing the need to type for an hour at my keyboard to some I could phone but didn’t really invite to have a chat with in the first place.

But when I was in uni I welcomed the fun and freedom that comes from online social networking.

For my two cents, we’ve just outgrown social networking….. we old

You may have a point there, Dave!

I dont wanna grow old :(

which was to neverland?

Dave “We are not really their target market though are we?”
Well yes and no. Certainly Bebo has a younger demographic and is aimed more closely at those in school but within the British Isles I guess Bebo would consider us a target market. Going by the amount of time some of our peers spend on Bebo it’s not something a lot of people are saying I’m too old for this. As for MySpace and maybe Facebook they definitely have an older following. I think if we are different in any way its maybe because we are a bit more web savvy and maybe expect more.

Social Networking? Is there an unsocial form of networking? When did hiding in your room looking at a computer screen, removed from society become social? Kids need to get back to what they were good at… annoying the old!!

A stick and a ball Colin, thats all I needed to have fun in my day.

Ciaran, I will stick with my original comment. I think your rebuttal is balls.

Maybe I still only need a stick and a ball?

“I think your rebuttal is balls.”

hmmmmm, well everyone I know is on one of these networks and none of them have ‘outgrown’ any of these sites. The main reason I want to move away from it is not because I think the idea is bad, it isn’t I even sometimes find it useful. The big problem I have is how MySpace, Bebo and Facebook work - the restrictions they place on me, the manner in which I have to interact with other users is all terrible. To simplify it for you dave - they require too much commitment.
